SMALL STUDY GROUPS I am offering a new format for studying the djembe and learning traditional West African rhythms. This involves working in small groups of up to about five people (at the same level), and meeting for a day or two every few months (frequency can be decided by the group). In each meeting we will concentrate on one rhythm and I will prepare written material and audio samples of the rhythm for the group to prepare at home at their own pace. The idea is that working in a small group allows for more individual attention and helps create a supportive environment for your own practice and development. Having a few months to prepare gives you more time to get to grips with the rhythm and gives you the possibility of getting together with others from your group to practise together. This is a learning method that I use myself. I travel to Germany twice a year and meet with a small group of djembe teachers from Belgium and Germany and together we spend a weekend with Rainer Polak working intensely on one rhythm. I have found it a great way to get to grips with the rhythms in all their detail and it gives me something to work towards in my own practice at home. The group is a great support as I am studying with others at my level and we have developed a good bond between us over the years. The group itself can decide how often they want to meet and how many people they want in the group etc. Cost will be confirmed depending on the numbers in the group and other factors. I am happy to consider groups of all levels. If you are interested in this or want further information please let me know. If you are already part of a small group or have some friends who would be interested in this please get in touch and we can work something out. Best wishes Neil |
